Arts for Peace

The Arts for PEACE (Peace Education through Arts, Culture, and Exposure) program seeks to imagine a future that celebrates the plenitude and diversity of the world's cultures. We offer programs and partnerships between artists of all ages and their audiences, emphasizing multiculturalism and social renewal.

Arts for Peace events showcase the visual and creative arts as a forum for peace education through:

  • exhibitions and performances
  • workshops and master classes for learners of all ages
  • film screenings followed by discussions on related social and political issues

As our societies become increasingly multicultural, we need alternative visions of what it means to coexist, interact, and learn in community with each other.

About the artist

Born in Mexico City, Ortiz is an accomplished artist, professional designer, and educator. Before launching his dynamic career, he was well-educated at several fine institutions, including the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas, formerly the Real Academia de San Carlos, the Escuela Técnica de Publicidad (the School for Strategic Communications), and the Printmaking Workshop in the Artist Community El Molino de Santo Domingo with Master Printmaker, Maruicio Lasandky.

His career led him to Ecuador, Colombia, Spain, and throughout the United States. It was in the latter where the young artist fell in love with the vibrant streets of New York. Manhattan captured Ortiz’s imagination and became the place he has called home for over 40 years. In New York, he continued his studies under the tutelage of notable Master Printmakers, Michael Ponce de Leon and Robert Blackburn.

For over 30 years, Ortiz was an educator at: School of Visual Arts, Pratt Institute; Baruch College, Parsons School of Design, Fashion Institute of Technology, and also served as Chair of the Spanish Art Students Program at SVA, all in New York.
